the Best Movies of 2024
My New Year’s resolution in 2023 was to log every movie I watched on Letterboxd. I did it. 2024 was a year for even more movies. I went to 35 movies in theaters and 99 new-to-me movies. Of those 99, here’s my top 10.
10. Poor Things (2023)
☆☆☆☆½
“This movie had more fisheyes than a salmon.”
Poor Things dominated the awards for 2023 and it was deserving. Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone were so good in this very weird movie. The whole thing is just visually stunning and Lanthimos is on one pretty much the entire time.
9. Civil War (2024)
☆☆☆☆½
“War—war never changes. Twitter vastly overreacted on Jesse and her film logistics–1/2 star because nikon sorry”
We all knew I was going to like the photojournalist movie. The ambiguity and struggle with impartiality as a journalist was really interesting even though the logistics of this civil war were a bit silly.
8. The Peasants (2023)
☆☆☆☆☆
1. This movie is a work of art straight up
2. They drink vodka like water
3. My polish heritage went crazy when they made peirogi and golabki
4. This movie is actually insane. Two hours. all of it hand painted. Good plot. Very Polish
7. Anatomy of a Fall (2023)
☆☆☆☆½
“225 days of French Duolingo led to this (I understood a few words)”
I don’t think I enjoyed a movie from 2023 Oscar class more than this one. Plus the dog is so cute and named Messi in real life.
6. Little Women (2019)
☆☆☆☆☆
“I just want all my dogs to eat.” ~ Jo March probably
The cast is stacked. The plot is beautiful. Maybe we are all little women?
5. Anora (2025)
☆☆☆☆☆
“It’s like Crazy Rich Asians + Poor Things + Annie”
I laughed. I cried. A whirlwind of emotions and is a must watch.
4. Fight Club (1999)
☆☆☆☆☆
“So I shouldn’t wash my hands?”
I can’t talk about it.
3. Past Lives (2023)
☆☆☆☆☆
“And it’s the silence that gets you”
I have never been ripped apart by a movie like this.
2. Black Swan (2010)
☆☆☆☆☆
“Whiplash but it’s Natalie Portman and Edgar Allan Poe”
One of the first movies I watched in 2024 and it stood strong amongst the top. I did NOT expect really anything in this.
1. Dune: Part Two (2024)
☆☆☆☆☆
“Holy peak cinema I’m buying a cloak”
I have never had a theater experience like this ever. It was incredible. Inject it into my veins. One of my favorite movies of all time, and I’m reading the books now.
